Liquid Sloshing Dynamics by Raouf A. Ibrahim

Original Title: Liquid Sloshing Dynamics

The problem of liquid sloshing in moving or stationary containers remains of great concern to aerospace, civil, and nuclear engineers; physicists; designers of road tankers and ship tankers; and mathematicians. Beginning with the fundamentals of liquid sloshing theory, this book takes the reader systematically from basic theory to advanced analytical and experimental results in a self-contained and coherent format. The book is divided into four sections. Part I deals with the theory of linear liquid sloshing dynamics; Part II addresses the nonlinear theory of liquid sloshing dynamics, Faraday waves, and sloshing impacts; Part III presents the problem of linear and nonlinear interaction of liquid sloshing dynamics with elastic containers and supported structures; and Part IV considers the fluid dynamics in spinning containers and microgravity sloshing. This book will be invaluable to researchers and graduate students in mechanical and aeronautical engineering, designers of liquid containers, and applied mathematicians.

Handbook Of Structural Life Assessment by Raouf A. Ibrahim

Original Title: Handbook Of Structural Life Assessment

This important, self-contained reference deals with structural life assessment (SLA) and structural health monitoring (SHM) in a combined form. SLA periodically evaluates the state and condition of a structural system and provides recommendations for possible maintenance actions or the end of structural service life. It is a diversified field and relies on the theories of fracture mechanics, fatigue damage process, and reliability theory. For common structures, their life assessment is not only governed by the theory of fracture mechanics and fatigue damage process, but by other factors such as corrosion, grounding, and sudden collision. On the other hand, SHM deals with the detection, prediction, and location of crack development online. Both SLA and SHM are combined in a unified and coherent treatment.

Tellurite Glasses Handbook by Raouf A.H. El-Mallawany

Original Title: Tellurite Glasses Handbook

Tellurite Glasses Handbook: Physical Properties and Data, Second Edition covers the current dominant physical properties of this prototype glass system. Focusing on thermal, elastic, acoustic, electrical, and optical properties, this second edition incorporates the latest scientific data and up-to-date applications of tellurite glass. New Topics in the Second Edition Nanocomposites Three-dimensional structural models Novel glass-forming systems Innovative ways to combine all physical properties simultaneously, creating new points for research Addressing the knowledge gap among physicists, chemists, and material scientists in their understanding of tellurite glasses’ properties, this edition gathers essential thermal, mechanical, electrical, and optical data in one source. It emphasizes the physics and technology of twenty-first century processing, fabrication, and behavior of tellurite glass and glass-ceramic materials. It is the first and only comprehensive source of physical constants and properties of these unique noncrystalline solids. After an introductory chapter on the composition of tellurite glasses, the book explores elastic, acoustic, thermal, electrical, and optical properties. Each chapter includes basic theories on a particular physical property, related experimental techniques, and representative data. The book uniquely presents a compilation of scientific data from the last 60 years as well as practical and strategic applications based on the properties of tellurite glasses.

Safety Assessment by B.S. Dhillon

Original Title: Safety Assessment

Over the years there have been several books and hundreds of articles and reports on safety, with more than three dozen journals and newsletters in English alone on this subject. Unlike other books, however, Safety Assessment gathers together vital information and presents a unified approach to current quantitative safety assessment. Previous knowledge of this subject is not necessary, since two chapters on introductory material are provided to give sufficient background. All chapters discuss topics of current interest. This book is excellent as a text for elective courses on safety for science, business, and engineering students. It is also an indispensable guide for engineers and professionals in industrial ergonomics, operations management, and production.

The Strong Horse by Lee Smith

Original Title: The Strong Horse

In this provocative and timely book, Middle East expert Lee Smith overturns long-held Western myths and assumptions about the Arab world, offering advice for America’s future success in the region. Seeking the motivation behind the September 11 attacks, Smith moved to Cairo, where he discovered that the standard explanation—a clash of East and West—was simply not the case. Middle East conflicts have little to do with Israel, the United States, or the West in general, but are endemic to the region. According to Smith’s “Strong Horse Doctrine,” the Arab world naturally aligns itself with strength, power, and violence. He argues that America must be the strong horse in order to reclaim its role there, and that only by understanding the nature of the region’s ancient conflicts can we succeed. Smith details the three-decades-long relationship between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the United States, and gives a history of the Muslim Brotherhood, which would likely play an important role in the formation of a new government in Egypt. He also discusses Lebanon, where tipping the balance against Hezbollah in favor of pro-democracy, pro-US forces has become imperative, as a special tribunal investigates the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. Eye-opening and in-depth, The Strong Horse is much needed background and perspective on today’s headlines. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Regulation Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Function by Raouf A. Khalil

Original Title: Regulation Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Function

In book the role of Ca2+ and other signaling pathways of Vascular smooth muscle (VSM) contraction will be discussed. VSM contraction plays an important role in the regulation of vascular resistance and blood pressure, and its dysregulation may lead to vascular diseases such as hypertension and coronary artery disease. Under physiological conditions, agonist activation of VSM results in an initial phasic contraction followed by a tonic contraction. The initial agonist-induced contraction is generally believed to be due to Ca2+ release from the intracellular stores. Although VSM is unique in that it can sustain contraction with minimal energy expense, the mechanisms involved in the maintained VSM contraction are not clearly understood.
